Simon Twitchen (Head Coach)
Former UK JSC Masters Surf Champion & surfer of the year carved his career after teaching himself how to surf in the chilly UK waters way back in 1982… originally with no wetsuit!
His passion for the sport kept him competing until 2015 when a couple of hip replacements etc slowed him down… a bit!
Simon has taught literally thousands of clients with varying abilities and is well regarded as one of the most experienced coaches in his field. Apparently, he still loves it!
Accreditation and Professional History
Simon started Croyde Bay’s first surf school back in 1986 which is still today one of the most popular surf destinations in Europe. Simon competed for over 20 years, has been coaching for 32 years and is a registered trainer, assessor and examiner for the Academy of Surfing Instructors International. He is also a trainer and examiner for the Australian Waterski and Wakeboard Federation.
Simon was the only person chosen to be on the advisory committee to AMSA (Australian Maritime Safety Authority) and has been behind most of the changes in the new legislation in the commercial field of waterskiing and wakeboarding throughout Australia.
Simon is as passionate as ever about watersports, but often warns his clients that if they get bitten by the surf or ski bug, they might end up needing hip replacements in 20 years too!
If you pop by any of the local beaches or reefs, you might still see him out there ripping it up, even if it is a little less radically than before!
Matt is a great all round surfer who just loves to rip on a range of different kinds of boards. From his 5’8 magic carpet style board to a 7’6 mini mal, he shreds them all. Matt is great with all ability levels & is incredibly patient. He also is pretty good with his camerawork, so good in fact he shoots for a range of shows for channel 7.
It’s great to have Matt on our team.
Joshua is a fully qualified Surf & Stand Up Paddle board coach, & is basically a fish! Joshua loves to be out on the reef breaks surfing, on the lakes on his SUP, or under the water taking amazing photographs.
His under water photography is simply stunning, so much so some of his photos have been used in major publications.
He also takes photos of clients for Walking On Water.
His best surf trip was Bali 2019 where he scored some solid waves at G-land, Airport lefts & middles.
Josh is a great encourager & is sure to give you all the tips you need to make your experience a memorable one.
Seth is our main man on logistics… If you have hired a double kayak, stand-up paddle boards, or had any of your equipment delivered, cleaned, or set up for an awesome activity… There’s a good chance that Seth has been the man to make it happen.
Often the secret to running a smooth but busy day with your corporate group or school etc is the preparation and delivery. In some cases this could be a logistical nightmare… Not so with Seth on the job! Say hi if you meet him…
Say Hi to Sara,
Sara loves the ocean too, so much in fact it’s hard to know if she has just come out the shower, or the sea because she always has wet hair! Sara is very calm in temperament but swims like as fast as a fish. She loves stand up paddle boarding & pretty much anything water related!!
Thea is Just lovely to encourage you on your water sports journey. Whether its on the lake or supporting you in the sea, Thea is your go-to for fun in the sun.
Meet Michael. Michael is a legend longboard cruiser who also happens to be president of the Mollymook Longboarders. Highly respected in his field, he has much competition experience. His coaching is mellow, patient and consistent. Say “G’day” when your riding down the 3ft face of a wave! You may also see him cruising about on our rescue boat on the lake.
We give the very best coaching with our qualified instructors and LONG lessons! We have a range of courses for beginner, intermediate and competition level. Ulladulla & Narrawallee Surf Schools’ adult lessons are the longest in Australia, (approx 2 ½ hours), with the best instructor to pupil ratios too. Most surf schools offer one instructor to eight pupils…with two hour lessons. Narrawallee Surf Schools offer a fantastic ratio of one experienced instructor to five pupils, which are the best ratios in Australia and is probably one of the reasons as why our success rate is so high. Ulladulla & Narrawallee Surf Schools will teach you how to SURF FOR LIFE, therefore we teach you the professional jump through as standard, (unless physical challenges apply). We do not teach you to go to your knees, we certainly won’t teach you the cross step “step up” that no real surfer ever, ever does.
There will be none of that one knee, one foot stance either, all of that is like teaching you to fail! No, we want you to surf for real, and most of the time we get you there in no time.
Ulladulla & Narrawallee Surf Schools provide only the best equipment with new wetsuits and surfboards arriving at our warehouse at the beginning of every season. We also wash and sanitize each wetsuit every time its used, so you will always get a clean fresh sanitized suit, (which is definitely not standard in many schools…yuk)!!
All our instructors are fully qualified surf coaches with full first aid, & APOLA lifeguard OSSCA certificates. Full working with children checks are standard too. With over 32 years in the industry, Narrawallee Surf School uses the best & most successful coaching methods.
Narrawallee Surf School & Walking on Water are not a budget surf school! We teach full and thorough lessons with our “Quality Coaching” program.
We will teach you beach safety, body stretches to warm up and a practical lesson on the beach.
The practical lesson includes many attributes some of which include surfboard handling, paddling techniques, body stances, various safety components and of course the “professional jump through”.
After the beach coaching we hit the water, its where the fun and the action begins! We have a very high success rate & most clients are up & riding in no time.
Narrawallee Surf School instructors are local surfers who know the local conditions like the back of their hand. We choose where you surf based on the prevailing conditions, the swell size, wind direction and state of the tide.
We teach the surf lessons at various locations throughout the Shoalhaven. Our courses cater to a range of skill levels, from the beginner, through our intermediate “Don’t just stand there”, to the competition level “XLR 8” course.
Narrawallee Surf School use a variety or surfboard sizes depending on your size and skill level – mini-mal soft boards for beginners, hard/soft boards for those progressing and custom boards for more advanced (although advanced lesson surfers usually have their own boards).
We have over 200 wetsuits, 50 Surfboards so it pretty likely we will have the equipment to match your size!
Lessons start from only $59 p/p
